My position with unicef was another government mandated volunteer position. I stumbled upon it while Christmas shopping. The middle-aged woman standing behind the booth was selling seasonal greeting cards and gift items made and/or designed in small villages all around the world.
I signed up. I was a little underprepared. Taxation was a relatively new concept to me – sure I knew it existed, but why or how the shopkeepers figured out how much extra they would charge me for my Skittles was still a mystery to me. How old was I? Oh, I dunno – twelve or so, I’m pretty sure I had just recently graduated to 9th grade when I started, but I helped out during two winters.
Fortunately the booth was located at Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket, so the people were all relatively laid back – and since they were on a mission to participate in good works or acts of charity by making a purchase at my booth – I had a considerable amount of assistance from our patrons on working out the finer details of purchase and sale.
I learned;
- the mall has bad air – it breeds nausea, fatigue and migraines.
- P.S.T, a novel concept at the time
- Smiling & Communicating breeds Patience & Understanding
